SAVE and Eat Well
Christopher Toole and Anya Pozdeeva are two brilliant people who gave me a massive energy boost this morning, and before coffee! They are former New York bankers who now help people get into fish farming inside their homes. Sounds a bit to post-apocalypse but it is exactly like any domestic aquarium, but stocked with our favourite edible freshwater fish, Tilapia. It is called Aquaponics and they now have a Society for Aquaponics Values and Education, SAVE.
No, we are not placing aquariums full of fish in our already over-stuffed house BUT we have the paddling pool up in the top of the veg plot. Snap! Himself is hiding behind his cup of coffee in the living room at this point. We have 8,000 litres of fresh water just lingering up there, idle.
There is even a filtration pump which came with the pool that we might be able to convert to an aerator. The fish could feed us in two ways. The first is obvious just thinking of sustainable fish and chips is so cod-friendly. The second brilliant flash is their poo in the water will make a naturally rich fertilizer for our plants! The fish are vegetarian, thank goodness because raising domestic Piranha is not my bag. They eat duck weed which forms another fertilizer as it dies out. There is no danger of the fish or plants escaping into our waterways as the pool is not connected to them in any way.
Check out the link to the article describing their ideas under Information to the right of this article. Meanwhile I am going to contact these people and find out how to convert our giant paddling pool into a fish farm.
Another stormy day made productive. By the way I made up 276 seeding pots yesterday then ran out of newspaper. Time to go raid the recycling bin.
